Our Honeymoon – Baraboo, WI
Aug. 28 & 29, 2009
As you know, I found the girl-of-my-dreams when I went to Charlotte,North Carolina with Sylvia &Patty, and we surprised everyone by getting married right away so she could return to Minnesota with me. That meant we didn’t have time for a honeymoon.
Three of my co-workers, Connie, Sue, and Elsa decided that that just wouldn’t do and they treated us to a fantastic two-day trip to Baraboo, WI, to visit Circus World. My beautiful bride (I call her my Princess) always dreamt of running away with the circus, to be a trapeze artist or tightrope walker, so Sue even bought her a beautiful beaded lavender outfit for the occasion.
Connie had us up, packed, and ready to go when the girls arrived, and we were on the road by 9:45 a.m. First stop, Tomah, WI, where the ladies treated us to a scrumptious lunch of 4-cheese omelet and warm, tasty sweet bread---Yum! Yum!
Back in the car, and time to check out the scenery. As you can see, my Princess was a little apprehensive with all the cars and trucks whizzing by, but that gave me a chance to be macho and assure her that I would always protect her.
We arrived at Circus World around 2:30 p.m., anxious to see all the sites. That’s us with the 5 Ringling Brothers who started the circus. The other brothers, and even their sister, helped with the business at times, but these 5 were the partners.
When I spotted Cinderella’s Carriage, I just had to take my Princess for a spin. There was so much to see in the museum that we couldn’t take it all in at once, and decided we should check out the grounds before time for the show in the Big Top.
Here I am! The World’s Greatest Lion Tamer---defying death by sitting in the mouth of the Lion! Impressive, huh!
Connie, Sue & Elsa took us for a ride on one of the circus parade cars.
Connie is going to be a clown , and an elephant rider ). Elsa is going to be an elephant rider, too, or maybe a bareback rider, and also a snake tamer . Sue is auditioning for the balancing and thrills acts . My darling, of course, will be a tightrope walker.
The end of our first exciting day found us really ready to settle down in the bed and breakfast the girls had found. It is called The Gollmar House because it is the former home of one of the Gollmer Brothers (4 of them) who started the Gollmar Circus, also there in Baraboo. Quite a circus history in this town. Anyway, we slept really well in our picture-perfect honeymoon bed.
Saturday morning we dined on a breakfast fit for a king! The breakfast was, well --- “to much”, as they say. Warm from the oven cranberry bread and fruit muffins, French toast with strawberries and whipped cream, cheese omelet, a tray of wonderful fruits…! A mouse could make “a pig” of himself without even trying. It was really hard to say goodbye to our wonderful hosts, Jon and Sharon, but here we are, ready to make a quick dash downtown to the historic Al. Ringling Theatre (you’ve GOT to go see it!).
Back at the circus, and here I am checking out the prospects for a 2nd circus career. . I’m wondering if it is enough to be just a world-class lion tamer, or if I should try being shot out of a cannon, too. My co-workers (Connie, Sue, and Elsa) are gently asking about work-life balance, and taking care of myself, but if the circus had a Dumbo who needed his feather to fly, I sure would be willing to risk getting it to him, even if it is dangerous.
After another full day, we headed home again. The girls had one last surprise for us---more cheese than a mouse could ever dream of! . We call this one “Eating with the Big Boys”.
Exhausted, but sublimely happy, we snuggled down for the long ride home.
